He added that the child appeared to be physically unharmed.
Mamdani said he would call President Donald Trump and demand that all ICE enforcement activity in the city cease. “I will not stand by and watch ICE agents terrorize our communities,” he said.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said ICE agents were conducting a “targeted enforcement operation” in the Bronx to arrest a convicted Dominican man around 4 p.m.
Officers “discharged their weapons,” injuring a man, the statement said.
DHS said the incident is still under investigation.
The New York City Police Department said the man was conscious and was being treated at a nearby hospital.

ICE is under surveillance
The shooting came after months of mounting criticism of the department.
In January, federal immigration agents shot and killed two Americans in Minneapolis. On January 7, Renee Nicole Good, 37, a mother of three, was shot and killed by an ICE agent, and Alex Preti, 37, an intensive care nurse, was shot and killed by a U.S. border agent.
After Ms. Goode was killed, Trump officials labeled her a “domestic terrorist,” even though video of the shooting cast doubt on her claim that she had tried to run over the agent.
As protests spread to hundreds of U.S. cities, the federal government removed local authorities from investigations, rejected requests for a civil rights investigation and sent hundreds more employees to Minnesota, bringing the total to 3,000.
President Trump has blamed unfair media coverage for the shift in U.S. public opinion toward immigration enforcement and called on DHS and ICE to publicly identify the “violent criminals” they have arrested.
ICE is tasked with a goal of deporting 1 million people a year.
By January, the agency had grown to more than 22,000 people and is now the most heavily funded federal law enforcement agency, with about $75 billion allocated over four years under the tax bill President Trump signed last year.
