core weaveBoth the company’s stocks and bonds took a hit Wednesday as investors grew concerned that some technology companies were borrowing heavily to boost their artificial intelligence.

Shares in the so-called NeoCloud plunged 16%, while bond yields soared. The yield to maturity of 9.625% corporate bonds due in 2032 is trending at 14.8%, while the yield to maturity of 9.75% corporate bonds due in 2031 is approximately 14.9%. Bond yields move inversely to prices.

Luis Alvarado, co-head of global fixed income strategy at Wells Fargo Investment Institute, said investors were once excited to be part of the AI movement, but investor sentiment is starting to change.

Investors are now looking for more risk coverage, he said.

“The era of easy money that we experienced in the first nine months of this year has disappeared and is starting to disappear,” Alvarado noted. “Now those extra dollars and marginal dollars will be put under a microscope to see what concessions the issuer will give back.”

Tech investor Chamath Palihapitiya, founder and CEO of investment firm Social Capital and CEO of AI company 8090, criticized the spike in Coreweave’s yield on X late Tuesday. That was the trigger tesla SpaceX CEO Elon Musk would say, “Yes.”

Palihapitiya shared a chart of the 2032 bond, noting that the yield “reached 15%” on Tuesday and then “closed at a new high.” He also included some deep dives into whether advances in AI are creating a private credit bubble, noting how “few lenders are charging for the additional risk of AI.”

“Relatively bad” balance sheet

Paul Meeks, head of technology research at Freedom Capital Markets, said Coreweave’s balance sheet is “relatively poor” compared to NeoCloud’s peers. That’s because CoreWeave is borrowing more and is currently building more data centers, he explained.

“Yields have skyrocketed because there’s more and more concern, and I don’t share that, about whether these guys are going to be able to pay off their interest payments over the long term,” Meeks said.

“The situation is by no means getting worse,” he added. “Maybe it hasn’t improved. I never expected it to improve until the data center was up and running.”

Technology sector hit

CoreWeave is not the only technology company to be negatively impacted by concerns about AI’s debt burden. for example, oracle It fell nearly 7% on Wednesday. Corporate bond yields also rose, with a 6.25% corporate bond due in November 2032 now yielding 7.24%.

The stock market fell across the tech sector on Wednesday, with the Nasdaq Composite down 1.4%. Debt concerns appear to be hitting volatile stocks outside of the Magnificent Seven the hardest.

Another Neocloud stock, Neviusdown 9%. Dell 10% cratering.

Companies are racing to build out AI infrastructure and are turning to credit markets to finance their projects, leading to a surge in supply.

Overall, hyperscalers are expected to spend $800 billion this year, according to JPMorgan. According to the bank, it is expected to exceed $1 trillion a year by 2027.
