Deezer will soon be able to filter out music generated by AI

Streaming platform Deezer remains steadfast in its intention to prevent users from listening to AI-generated music: The company announced Tuesday that it is working on a new toggle that will allow users to filter AI-generated music uploaded to the platform. This feature is expected to be available by the end of the year.

Deezer says turning on the toggle will prevent AI-generated tracks, albums, and related artists from appearing in search results.

“We’ve seen clear user demand for the ability to filter out AI-generated music, and we’re now giving everyone the option to completely remove this content from their Deezer streaming experience if they wish, focusing solely on human creators and their work,” Deezer CEO Alexis Lanternier said in a statement.

He added that the explosion of AI music on the platform is one of the catalysts for toggle-based features. The company cited a study from last year that showed about 45% of Deezer customers wanted a way to remove AI music from their feed.

Deezer added an AI detection tool last year and has continued to report the number of tracks uploaded to the platform ever since. At the time, AI-generated tracks accounted for 10% of daily uploads.

In July, the company announced that more than 50% of daily uploads to its platform are AI-generated tracks, reaching an average of 90,000 tracks per day.

Other music streaming services have also created their own policies regarding AI music. Bandcamp completely banned AI tracks, and Tidal cut off monetization for people who upload AI music. Spotify is taking a leaner stance, tagging only AI tracks and artists more prominently on its platform.

In August, Variety reported that Apple Music was considering labeling AI tracks by the end of the year. In addition to platform-based tagging, users are also turning to independent tracking systems to identify AI music.
