Anthropic has struggled to secure enough cloud capacity from AWS, Google and Microsoft, which increasingly view cloud makers as competitors rather than customers, according to S-1 filings leaked to the Wall Street Journal.
The leaked filings add further color to figures reported by Reuters and the Financial Times in late September, including that Anthropic believes it could spend an additional $750 billion on cloud deals, including deals that are still being negotiated.
Still, that’s not enough. Anthropic leases its own data centers and works with third-party data center operators. However, the company is concerned that these operators may be less reliable than hyperscalers due to their “limited operating history.”
Anthropic’s huge spending comes on the back of an $80.7 billion net loss in the first half of this year. The company reported $16.3 billion in revenue during the same period, with just two customers accounting for about a fifth of its sales, WSJ reported.
The filing also warns that Anthropic could be held liable for damages caused by the AI’s harmful behavior, which could exceed insurance coverage based on previously reported catastrophic risk disclosures.
The company told potential investors last week that its third-quarter revenue alone reached $16.8 billion, an increase of 45% from the previous quarter. Anthropic is reportedly aiming for an IPO in November.
Anthropic did not immediately respond to TechCrunch’s request for comment.
