Rivian expands joint venture with VW to include AI assistant

The $5.8 billion joint venture between Rivian and Volkswagen Group is expanding to include AI assistants.

Rivian is currently licensing elements of its AI voice assistant technology to Volkswagen Group as part of a broader joint venture, according to the company’s third-quarter investor presentation released Thursday.

Rivian did not disclose licensing fees, payment terms, or which Volkswagen cars would use the technology. But the AI assistant, recently introduced in Rivian cars, could debut in Volkswagen’s low-cost EV ID EVERY1. The small four-door hatchback is expected to be the first Volkswagen vehicle to use Rivian’s software and electrical architecture under a joint venture established in 2024.

The joint venture between Rivian and the Volkswagen Group has already expanded once, at least financially. The companies initially announced a joint venture worth up to $5 billion, but within months VW upped its commitment to invest up to $5.8 billion in Rivian by 2027. The first partnership, formalized through an independent company launched in November 2024, focused on bringing Rivian’s electrical architecture and software to Volkswagen’s next-generation vehicles.

Rivian described the expansion, which includes elements of AI assistant technology, as “a proof point for the scalability of the platform we built in-house.”

Rivian spent two years developing the AI assistant and announced it last year. Its development work lasted longer than expected, and the assistant was finally introduced in May 2026 in the flagship R1S SUV, R1T pickup truck, and in October in the new R2 mid-size SUV.

Rivian has high hopes for AI assistants that allow drivers and passengers to interact with the vehicle and control certain functions. Rivian founder and CEO RJ Scaringe told TechCrunch on stage at Disrupt 2026 that the company has created a proprietary in-house agent framework that understands what action a person wants to take when they talk to a vehicle and routes it to the appropriate part of the vehicle’s software. This feature could eventually allow Rivian vehicles to run AI agents created by other companies, such as Anthropic.

The internal AI assistant program also fits in with Rivian’s efforts to become more vertically integrated. It’s a strategy the company highlighted in its third-quarter earnings report.

“Our relentless focus on vertical integration remains a core competitive differentiator, allowing Rivian to seamlessly integrate our hardware and software architectures to deliver significant value to our customers,” the company said in an investor presentation.

With this strategy, Rivian has overhauled its flagship R1T truck and R1S SUV, changing everything from the battery pack and suspension system to the electrical architecture, sensor stack, and software user interface. New electrical architecture systems and computing platforms have reduced the amount of wiring used, reducing the total number of electronic control units (computers) used to control the vehicle from 17 different ECUs to seven. That foundation, Rivian argued, will allow it to build vehicles that can handle the computing demands needed for advanced software and autonomous driving.

The technology has attracted attention (and money) from Volkswagen, which has struggled to offer customers the modern, software-centric cars found in competitors such as Tesla.

Rivian reiterated the case for vertical integration in its investor presentation, saying that because it controls the entire technology stack, including compute, sensors, display, lighting and sound, “we can rapidly deploy vehicle-wide OTA updates that go well beyond the basics.”
