According to CGT, about 800,000 people demonstrated across France, with 250,000 taking part in Paris. Economic expansion in the euro zone slowed to 0.4% in the third quarter, statistics agency Eurostat said on Friday.

The 21-nation eurozone rebounded to 0.6% growth in the second quarter after stagnation in the first three months of this year.

Still, preliminary figures for the third quarter beat the 0.2% growth expected in a Reuters poll of economists.

However, the French economy unexpectedly contracted by 0.1% between July and September. The country is grappling with soaring borrowing costs as investors balk at political fights to reduce the country’s large deficit amid growing national anxiety over the cost of living.

The European Central Bank voted on Thursday to keep interest rates unchanged, saying the shock from soaring energy prices has not had a secondary impact on the broader economy. But analysts said the ECB could choose to raise rates again in December as energy costs remain high.

The central bank also said downside risks to growth were increasing.
