Bitcoin Shares fell on Friday as concerns over a $6.3 billion hack at Binance, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in history, rattled digital asset markets.
The world’s largest cryptocurrency fell 4.1% to $77,445.96.
etherBinance, the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, fell 4.4% to $2,229.50, while Binance’s native token, BNB, fell 6% to $701.18.
Binance announced on Friday that the security incident had an estimated impact of $6.3 billion, with approximately $3 billion of crypto assets frozen to date, and promised to reimburse all losses.
The world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange said that initial investigation suggests that “the security incident may have involved a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop, which allowed the attacker to access the service container and send fraudulent withdrawal transactions.”
Binance co-founder Yi He said that deposits are unaffected and continue to operate normally while the exchange works to strengthen withdrawal services and related address management. We plan to start resuming withdrawal services within the next 48 hours.
This trend has renewed concerns about security vulnerabilities in the cryptocurrency industry, which has seen a series of large-scale breaches in recent years.
In 2025, virtual currency exchange Bybit was hacked to the tune of approximately $1.5 billion, and recently rival Bitget also lost more than $350 million in digital assets to cyber theft.
