Apple CEO says company is ‘not going to ship AI for AI’s sake’

In a recent interview with Wired’s Steven Levy, Apple CEO John Ternus defended the company’s current position in the AI space.

Over the past few years, Apple has often been accused of being behind the times when it comes to AI. Especially because of the delayed release of a more powerful version of Siri, which was finally released this summer. But Tarnas, a longtime Apple executive who officially took over as CEO in early September, acknowledged that “everybody has an opinion,” but insisted, “I really like where we are.”

Turnus added that Apple “absolutely intends to leverage AI” in new products, but added: “We don’t want to ship AI for AI’s sake. If we’re doing it right, people won’t have to wonder whether it’s AI or traditional software that made this happen. What matters is, did we make something that we really like?”

And when Levy asked whether AI could have an even more dramatic impact on Apple and its ecosystem, with agents potentially making things like apps unnecessary, Tarnas replied: “It might really make life easier, but creating products is a very human and personal thing, and that’s what we like to do.”
