The post came days after Democrats won majorities in both chambers of the U.S. Congress from Republicans in Tuesday’s midterm elections. Democratic lawmakers and newly elected candidates said they would move forward with investigations into the Trump family’s financial dealings and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), as well as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Attorney General Todd Blanche.
“Democrats are threatening a lot of people,” Trump wrote, adding that some members of his cabinet are at risk of impeachment. “This is extortion at the highest level and they must be held accountable for this.”
Trump also said without evidence that some Democrats are threatening donors, calling them “the most respected people in the world.” He said Democrats were targeting them for their political views, specifically naming Michigan Sen. Elissa Slotkin. He offered no evidence that she threatened people over their opinions.
If Democrats take control of Congress in January, they will be able to order access to documents, subpoena Trump officials to testify and hold public hearings, among other investigations.
California Democratic Rep. Robert Garcia, who is likely to become chairman of the powerful House Oversight Committee, which acts as the House’s investigative committee and has broad jurisdiction and powers, posted on social media to “get a lawyer” after it became clear that Democrats would control the House.
During his second term, President Trump has called for investigations into his political opponents, including former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James.
