Britain’s Cameron Norrie defeated world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 at the Paris Masters on Tuesday to advance to the third round and end the Spaniard’s winning streak at 17 ATP Masters 1000 level.

Alcaraz, a six-time Grand Slam champion who just won his eighth title of the season in Tokyo, sat out the game, made 54 unforced errors and vented his frustration in a terse exchange with coach Juan Carlos Ferrero.

While Alcaraz was unable to maintain his momentum after winning the first set, Norrie steadily grew in confidence and in the seventh game of the final set, the world No. 31 Alcaraz fought off two break points and held serve to decide the match after 2 hours and 22 minutes.

“Big (win). Very big for me,” Nolley said. “I’m coming back from an injury. Last year I lost in the first qualifying round here. This year I lost in the first round.”

“I’ve been trying to enjoy my tennis for the second half of the year and I was able to do that and get a win like this. This is the biggest of my career and my first against the world number one, especially against the most confident player in the world right now.”

Alcaraz’s loss was his first before the final since March, ending a dominant run in the Masters 1000 leading up to the Miami Open, during which he won titles in Monte Carlo, Rome and Cincinnati.

With the win, Norie advances to the last 16 of a Masters tournament for the first time since Rome in 2023, and matches his previous best result at the 2021 Paris Games.

Alcaraz risks losing his world number one spot at the end of the year if Italy’s Jannik Sinner wins the Paris title this week.

Norrie will next face Valentin Bachelot or Arthur Rinderknek, who they will meet in a rematch of the Shanghai Masters final on Wednesday.
