Newcastle are on track to remain in the Carabao Cup after beating Tottenham 2-0 at home to reach the quarter-finals.
The Holders drew with Fulham in the last eight at home and beat them 2-1 in the Premier League at St James’ Park last weekend.
Newcastle are aiming to reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals for the fourth successive year after Fabian Schaal and Nick Waltemaide’s headers handed Tottenham their first away defeat of the season in all competitions.
Newcastle got off to a fast start and deservedly took the lead with Schall, one of eight changes from Saturday’s home win against Fulham, heading home from a 24th-minute corner.
However, Spurs were unhappy with the opening match referee, who ruled that Jed Spence, who lost his boot in the build-up to a corner, was not given enough time to take up a position in the box after putting it back on.
Spurs manager Thomas Frank told Sky Sports he felt it was a “mistake” for referee Chris Kavanagh not to give Spence time to go back and mark his man Schar.
Harvey Barnes almost doubled Newcastle’s lead in the 41st minute when he hit the bar from close range, and was almost penalized for a mistake in first-half stoppage time, when Richarlison headed home Newcastle goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.
It was a frustrating night for the Spurs striker. They struggled in front of goal and five minutes into the second half, opposite-numbered Waltemade came on to double the home side’s lead.
Newcastle’s club record signing took full advantage of Spurs goalkeeper Antonin Kinski’s misjudgment on Joe Willock’s cross to score his sixth goal in nine starts.
Tottenham tried to fight back, but former Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale made a good save to deny Pape Sarr’s powerful curling shot inside the penalty area.
Tottenham’s Newcastle exploits continue, with Eddie Howe’s side now winning six of their last seven games against the north London club in all competitions.
Newcastle will be looking to make it three wins in a row when they face West Ham in the Premier League on Sunday (live on Sky Sports). Spurs will be looking to bounce back at home to London rivals Chelsea on Saturday, also live on Sky Sports.
Mr Howe praises Waltemaid’s influence
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe told Sky Sports about Woltemade:
“I think he was very open, very open to new ideas, very open to implementing what we wanted him to do. So he absorbed all the information that we gave him and was very good tactically, which allowed us to play the way we wanted.”
“Once we get that framework, I think we can develop his skills. And he has unique skills. He has a very strong game.
“It was great to see him score a goal today because every striker needs that confidence and it will give him the confidence to go even further.”
On defending the Carabao Cup: “It means everything. We are slowly trying to take small steps.
“We have advanced to the quarterfinals, but I think this is a big hurdle for us. We are now entering the second half of the tournament.
“We know what it’s like and we hope the experience of the past three years will serve us well.”
Frank blames goal on ‘mistake’ but is ‘satisfied’ with performance
Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank told Sky Sports:
“I’m very happy with the performance in many ways. It was a very difficult away ground and we created a lot of good chances.
“I think it was one of our better performances this season, so I’m very happy with that performance. I think the mentality of the players was great.”
“We conceded two goals through mistakes. The first was a mistake by referee Chris (Cavanagh) because he didn’t give Jed (Spence) time to come back, which he clearly should have done. On top of that, Jed was supposed to mark Schaal who scored.”
“The second one was unfortunately Tony (Antonin Kinski)’s mistake.”
As for Schaal’s first goal: “It was completely common sense (to give Spence time to recover).
“It’s not 88 minutes yet. Jed is getting back into position. He’s not doing anything on purpose. He needs to fix his shoelaces. It’s obviously come off the boot. So that’s just my little feeling.”
Analysis: Richarlison’s struggle continues
It was an unforgettable night for Richarlison.
The Brazilian was given a chance to regain his place after being sent off in Sunday’s win over Everton, but he failed to capitalize.
In the first half, he mistimed Lukas Bergvall’s cross, failed to connect with Brennan Johnson’s low ball and wasted three chances when he headed home Ramsdale.
Sky Sports’ Jovi McAnuf said of Richarlison at half-time: “He seems to have everything going against him.”
And that certainly didn’t change in the second half, with Richarlison’s poor play up front leading to Woltemade’s goal.
The Brazilian was in a good position on the edge of Newcastle’s box but was easily deflected and just 35 seconds later Woltemade headed the ball into the Spurs net.
The 28-year-old was denied at his near post by Ramsdale and was sent off in the 78th minute after failing to find the back of the net despite four shots.
His early season promise has now completely evaporated, with the £60m man now goalless in his last eight appearances.
And on the evidence at St James’ Park, Richarlison will return to the bench for this weekend’s London derby against Chelsea.
