Rescue efforts continue across the Caribbean after Hurricane Melissa, which hit the region as one of the most powerful Atlantic storms in more than 150 years.

Heavy rain and strong winds have already caused widespread damage along the storm’s path in Jamaica, Cuba and the Bahamas.

The storm damaged homes, caused severe flooding and widespread power outages, forcing hundreds of thousands of people to evacuate across the Caribbean.

Several international efforts have also been launched, with emergency authorities beginning to collect pieces and building roads to reach isolated communities in need of relief.

The Regional Disaster Assistance Team (DART), launched by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on October 29, has been deployed and will be dispatched to the area today.

Jamaica was hit the hardest. Melissa made landfall there as a Category 5 storm, with estimated maximum sustained wind speeds of 185 mph (295 kph).

CNN’s Derek Van Dam on Thursday described streets in the hard-hit Jamaican coastal city of Black River as “complete and utter destruction.”

Black River is dealing with damage from Hurricane Melissa’s more than 15-foot storm surge, which destroyed the town’s infrastructure on the island’s southwest.

Heat and humidity complicate recovery efforts. There are makeshift refugee camps for people who survived the storm, but nothing remains.

Education Minister Dana Morris-Dixon said in a statement Tuesday that about 25,000 tourists remained in Jamaica even as the country recovered from the storm.

On Thursday, Jamaican government officials said 72% of the island was without power and more than 13,000 residents remained in shelters.

Local government and regional development minister Desmond McKenzie said overall the country’s infrastructure had been hit and was “at serious risk”.

CNN reporters watched residents and military personnel in the town of Santa Cruz push more than a dozen ambulances through storm debris as medical teams headed to hard-hit coastal areas in western Jamaica.

Cuba also suffered major damage after the hurricane made landfall in the country as a Category 3 storm on Wednesday. According to President Miguel Diaz-Canel, the country suffered “extreme damage.”

This included flooding, landslides, destruction of goods, and damage to infrastructure, leaving hundreds of rural communities stranded, especially in eastern Cuba.

More than 735,000 people were evacuated in Cuba as Melissa approached.

Stephen Gadar, a resident of Petit Goave, told The Associated Press that his entire family was killed in the storm.

“There were four children at home: a one-month-old baby, a seven-year-old, an eight-year-old and a baby who was almost four years old,” he said.
