Android version of Sora hits nearly 500,000 installs on first day

Sora’s Android release is off to a good start. ChatGPT maker OpenAI’s AI video app was downloaded an estimated 470,000 times across available markets on its first day of availability on the Google Play Store, according to new estimates from app intelligence provider Appfigures.

This made the Android release more than four times larger than the iOS release, with installs increasing by 327% (360,000). However, the company notes that this is not an apples-to-apples comparison.

On iOS, Sora was only available in the US and Canada and was invite-only.

However, Sora on Android is available in the US, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam, and OpenAI removed the invitation requirement for top markets in late October.

You can now access the Sora app without an invite code in the US, Canada, Japan, and South Korea.

The app became a huge hit after its debut, despite its early exclusive status. The iOS app achieved over 1 million installs in its first week and quickly shot to the top of the App Store. It still ranks as the #4 app on the US App Store’s iPhone Top Free chart.

With Sora, users leverage AI to create videos using prompts. These videos can also include AI-animated users and their friends through a feature known as Cameos. The videos can be scrolled in a TikTok-like vertical feed, so you can see what others are making with the technology.

Appfigures also revised its previous estimates for first-day downloads on iOS for the Sora app. Initially, the app had around 56,000 downloads on its first day, according to the company’s model. Now that more time has passed, the model can more accurately predict that number to be closer to 110,000, of which about 69,300 are installations in the United States.

By comparison, the Sora Android app has approximately 296,000 US-based installs out of a total of 470,000 installs, indicating that there is still interest in the AI video maker even after the buzz of the initial iOS release has died down.

Sora also competes with Meta AI, which released its mobile app today for European users after earlier debuting in the United States.
