Hinge’s new AI features help daters break out of boring small talk

Many daters on Hinge are frustrated by people who just like their profile but don’t bother to strike up a conversation. It often leads to this awkward silence and puts all the pressure on one person to make the first move. Instead of saying something interesting, some people just fall back on the same old path or stick to boring small talk like “How’s it going?”

To address this issue, Hinge announced “Convo Starters,” an AI-powered feature that provides personalized tips to start conversations.

This feature is meant to inspire daters and boost their confidence when sending their first message. If a user likes your profile, they’ll be prompted with three customized tips below each photo. AI evaluates users’ profiles and generates recommendations based on individual photos and prompts. For example, if you see a photo of a potential opponent playing chess, Hinge might suggest starting a conversation around board games.

Convo Starters was developed in response to user feedback, Hinge said. According to the company’s research, 72% of people who date on Hinge are more likely to consider someone if their likes include a message. Hinge data reveals that people who like comments are twice as likely to set up a date.

This new feature follows the launch of our AI-driven Prompt Feedback feature, which evaluates users’ prompts and provides customized advice aimed at improving them by encouraging users to elaborate and share fascinating details about their lives.

However, because Hinge has built AI features into its app, many users, especially Gen Z, are uncomfortable with the idea of using AI in their online dating experience. A study by Bloomberg Intelligence found that Gen Z is more concerned than older generations about using AI for tasks such as creating profile prompts and responding to messages.

Hinge’s parent company, Match Group, has committed approximately $20 million to $30 million to its AI efforts.
