ChatGPT voice mode is no longer a separate interface

ChatGPT’s voice mode is now even easier to use. OpenAI announced Tuesday that it will update the user interface of its popular AI chatbot to allow users to access ChatGPT Voice within chats without switching to another mode.

This means you will be able to talk to the chatbot and display responses, such as shared images, during the conversation. Previously, you would see another screen where you interacted with an animated blue circle that represented ChatGPT’s voice interface. This screen also had a mute button, an option to record live video, and an X to return to the default text-based mode.

In these previous conversations, you could only hear what ChatGPT was saying instead of seeing it on the screen. Viewing responses as text requires exiting separate voice mode, which can be a hassle if you miss a response.

ChatGPT Voice can now be used directly within chats. No need for another mode.

The company says you can have a conversation as ChatGPT responds to your questions and watch the answers appear. You can also see previous messages and view visuals like images and maps in real time during conversations.

This change allows you to more easily move between voice and text within the same conversation, making interactions with AI chatbots more natural. However, when you are ready to switch to text, you must tap End to stop the voice conversation.

This improved voice mode is the new default and is now rolling out to all users of our web and mobile apps.

For those who prefer separate audio modes, OpenAI says you can revert back to the original experience under ‘Audio Mode’ in ‘Settings’. Here you will see a new option to turn on “Isolation Mode”.
