DoorDash appears to have confirmed a viral story about a driver who lied about making a delivery using an AI-generated photo.

As reported by Nexstar, Austin resident Vern Hobart experienced just this, writing in a post on X: “Great. The DoorDash driver picked up the drive, immediately marked it as delivered, and sent the AI-generated DoorDash order image (left) to my front door (right).”

After his post started gaining traction, Hobart provided further details and admitted that it was “very easy” for his story to be fabricated. But he noted that “someone claimed in a lower thread that the same thing happened in Austin with the same driver display name.”

As for how the driver did it, Hobart speculated that he used a hacked account on a jailbroken cell phone and obtained the image of the front door through the DoorDash feature, which shows photos of previous deliveries.

A DoorDash spokesperson told TechCrunch, “After quickly investigating this incident, our team permanently deleted Dasher’s account and fully reinstated the customer. We have zero tolerance for fraud and use a combination of technology and human review to detect and stop malicious actors from misusing our platform.”
