New Relic announces new AI agent platform and OpenTelemetry tool

To help enterprises adopt AI, more and more companies are releasing software to build and monitor AI agents. New Relic is no exception. The data observability company knows it’s not the only game in the game as it launches its own AI agent platform.

New Relic on Tuesday announced a no-code agent platform that allows companies to integrate data observability AI agents that monitor corporate data and catch bugs and issues before they disrupt products. The platform, called New Relic Agentic Platform, allows businesses to deploy pre-built agents and manage existing bots as well.

It also supports Model Context Protocol (MCP), which connects your AI applications to external data sources and integrates with other New Relic tools.

New Relic isn’t aiming to be the only platform that enterprises use to manage and deploy all their AI agents, Brian Emerson, the company’s new chief product officer, told TechCrunch. Instead, it is intended to provide clients with the same agent building functionality provided elsewhere for observability.

“We’re not building this as a general-purpose product,” Emerson said. “We’re building it to get important results within observability. It’s also a world that allows us to work with the rest of the ecosystem and the tools that are out there, but it also allows us to bring it back into the context of the problems we’re trying to solve around the persona and observability domain.”

Software that allows users to manage AI agents has proliferated in recent months as companies look for ways to ease concerns about giving them access to their data and software.

Salesforce probably first released an agent platform called Agentforce in late 2024. Earlier this year, OpenAI announced its own version of the technology, OpenAI Frontier. Research organization Gartner calls these agent platforms “necessary infrastructure” and a key element in getting companies to adopt AI.

In keeping with the theme of accelerating enterprise technology adoption, New Relic also unveiled new tools focused on OpenTelemetry (OTel), an open source observability framework.

The company said its Application Performance Monitoring (APM) agent now includes OTel functionality, allowing enterprises to manage OTel data streams alongside other data sources in one place. This aims to resolve the previous fragmentation issue that hindered large-scale enterprise adoption of the OTel framework.

“Send us your OTel data,” says Nic Benders, chief technology strategist at New Relic. “What we discovered in this process is that for a lot of teams around the world, running all the OTel (data) collectors is kind of a burden, so having fleet management like OTel is really important.”
