OpenAI acquires Promptfoo to secure AI agents

OpenAI announced on Monday that it has acquired Promptfoo, an AI security startup founded in 2024 to protect LLMs from online adversaries.

Frontier Labs said in a blog post that once the deal closes, Promptfoo’s technology will be integrated into OpenAI Frontier, the company’s enterprise platform for AI agents.

The development of independent AI agents to perform digital tasks is generating excitement about increased productivity. But it also presents new opportunities for bad actors to access sensitive data and manipulate automated systems. The deal highlights how Frontier Labs is working hard to prove its technology can be safely used in critical business operations.

Promptfoo was founded by Ian Webster and Michael D’Angelo to develop tools such as open source interfaces and libraries that enterprises can use to test LLM for security vulnerabilities. The company reports that its products are used by more than 25% of Fortune 500 companies.

According to Pitchbook, Promptfoo has raised just $23 million since its founding and is valued at $86 million after its latest round in July 2025. OpenAI did not disclose the transaction amount.

According to OpenAI’s post, Promptfoo’s technology will enable its agent platform to run automated red teams, assess agent workflows for security concerns, and monitor activity for risk and compliance needs. The company also said it plans to continue building Promptfoo’s open source product.
