Roblox’s 4D creation feature is now available in open beta

Last year, Roblox announced open-source AI models that can generate 3D objects on the platform, allowing users to quickly design digital items such as furniture, vehicles, and accessories. The company says the tool, called Cube 3D, has helped users generate more than 1.8 million 3D objects since it was launched last March.

The company on Wednesday launched an open beta of its much-anticipated 4D creation feature, which will allow creators to create fully functional, interactive objects, not just static 3D models. This feature has been in early access since November.

Roblox says 4D creation adds an important new layer of interactivity. This technology allows users to design items that allow players to move and react in-game.

At startup, there are two types of object templates (called schemas) that authors can try.

The first is the “Car-5” schema, which is used to create a car that consists of five separate parts: the body and four wheels. Previously, a car was a single solid 3D object that could not move. The new system divides objects into parts and assigns behaviors to each part so that they function independently within the virtual world. Therefore, AI can generate cars with rotating wheels, making them more realistic and interactive.

The second one, called “Body-1”, can generate any object made from a single part, such as a simple box or a sculpture.

The first experience with 4D generation was a game called Wish Master, which allowed players to generate cars that could be driven, airplanes that could be flown, and even dragons.

In the future, Roblox plans to allow authors to create their own schemas, giving them more freedom to define the behavior of their objects. The company says it is also developing new technology that can use reference images to create detailed 3D models that match the style of the image (example below).

The company said it is developing further ways to use AI to help people create games and experiences, including a project it calls “Real-time Dreaming.” Roblox CEO David Baszucki explained last month that the project will allow creators to build new worlds using “keyboard navigation and sharing real-time text prompts.”

The open beta comes on the heels of Roblox’s recent introduction requiring users to use facial recognition to access in-game chat features, following lawsuits and investigations into child safety.
