Toy Story 5 takes aim at creepy AI toys: ‘I’m always listening’

When the first Toy Story movie was released in 1995, Google didn’t exist yet and Apple was on the verge of bankruptcy. No one could have predicted that Pixar would still be making Toy Story movies more than 30 years later, or that the latest installment in the series would pit Buzz Lightyear and a bald Woody against an evil AI tablet called Lilypad.

But sure enough, Toy Story 5 pits classic toys like Mrs. Potato Head, Rex, and Slinky Dog against the evil threat of technology.

The trailer shows Bonnie, the girl who inherited Andy’s toys from Toy Story 2, playing with them outside when she receives a surprise package containing a Lilypad tablet. She was completely engrossed in her tablet and wouldn’t look up from the screen even when her parents told her her screen time was over.

The trailer for Toy Story 5 reveals that Lilypad, or Lily, is an evil villain. When Jesse asks Tablet about Bonnie’s safety, Lily doesn’t seem to be paying attention, so Cowgirl demands that Tablet listen to her.

“I always listen,” Lily says ominously, regurgitating Jesse’s impassioned speech in a computerized tone and translating it into Spanish.

“Technology has invaded our home,” Jesse tells Woody. “We’re going to lose Bonnie to this device.”

Woody replies, “Toys are for play, but technology is for everything.”

Will Toy Story 5 be able to strike a chord with young children and make them think twice about the effects of too much screen time? That may be an exaggeration. But at least it gives you something to watch that isn’t as distracting as Cocomelon.
