Anthropic's Claude tops Apple App Store after clash with Pentagon

Anthropic’s Claude artificial intelligence model experienced an “increase in errors” on Monday as the app remained the most popular free app. appleApp Store.

Claude’s status website showed “degraded performance” in the latest model, Claude Opus 4.6, released last month.

The site said in an update at 10:49 a.m. ET that an issue with Opus 4.6 has been identified and a fix is in the works.

An update to the site at 10:47 a.m. ET said the issue with claude.ai, console, and claude code had been resolved.

“Claude is back and running on claude.ai and our apps. Our team is working to meet the incredible demand for Claude in recent days and we thank our users,” Anthropic told CNBC in a memo just before 11 a.m. ET.

The AI chat app skyrocketed in popularity following a clash with the Department of Defense over restrictions on government agencies’ use of Anthropic’s technology.

Anthropic signed a $200 million contract with the Department of Defense in July. Tensions arose after Anthropic asked the government to prevent its AI models from being used for fully autonomous weapons or mass domestic surveillance of Americans.

The Pentagon pushed back, demanding that the military be allowed to use the platform for any purpose deemed lawful.

On Friday, President Donald Trump ordered all U.S. government agencies to “immediately cease” use of Anthropic’s technology. Shortly afterward, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced in X that the Pentagon would classify the company as a “supply chain risk to national security.”

AI rival OpenAI reached an agreement with the Department of Defense hours after the government severed ties with humanity.
