finding

At least three people were killed and 29 injured in a Russian drone attack on the Ukrainian capital Kiev early Sunday, Ukraine’s Interior Minister Ihor Klimenko said. Seven children were also among the injured, Klimenko said. Russian attacks killed a 63-year-old man in the southeastern Zaporizhzhya region on Sunday night and another person in the eastern Kharkov region on Saturday night, the Kiev Independent reported on Sunday, citing local officials. One person was killed on Sunday in a Russian attack in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, and four more were killed on Saturday, Governor Vadim Filashkin said in a Telegram post. Russia’s state-run TASS news agency reported early on Monday, citing emergency services, that a Ukrainian attack on Russian-occupied Donetsk in eastern Ukraine has killed two people in the city’s Leninsky district. One person was killed in another Ukrainian attack on the Russian-occupied Kherson region, TASS news agency reported, citing local officials. Another attack by Ukrainian forces on the Russian-occupied Donetsk region early Sunday left at least three people dead in the Yasinuvata region, TASS reported. In Russia, a Ukrainian drone attack on the capital Moscow forced the closure of the city’s four airports early Monday, with Russian air defense forces shooting down 28 drones over a five-hour period, Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said. Sunday’s attack in Ukraine also killed one person in Russia’s Belgorod region. Russian forces shot down 281 Ukrainian drones and two guided bombs in 24 hours. According to TASS, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported.
The General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces announced that its forces had regained control of two settlements in the Donetsk region (Kucherev Yar and Shhetsk) in the past 10 days.

weapons

Russian President Vladimir Putin says Russia has successfully tested the nuclear-powered Burevestnik cruise missile, a nuclear-capable weapon capable of penetrating any defensive shield, and will move toward deploying the weapon. “This is a unique pottery that no one else in the world has,” Putin said in a statement released by the Kremlin on Sunday. Russia’s military chief of staff, General Valery Gerasimov, told President Putin in a joint statement on Sunday that the missile had flown 14,000 kilometers (8,700 miles) and had been in the air for about 15 hours. Putin’s aide Kirill Dmitriev, who was in the United States at the time of the video’s release, said his delegation had informed U.S. officials of the “successful test” of the Burevestnik, which he described as a “completely new class” of weapons.

politics and diplomacy

Prime Minister Roberto Fico said Sunday that Slovakia will not participate in any European Union plan aimed at financing military aid to Ukraine in the fight against Russian aggression. “I reject Slovakia’s participation in any financial program aimed at helping control Ukraine’s war and military spending.” North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui will visit Russia from October 26 to 28, Russian state news agency RIA reported on Sunday, citing the Russian Foreign Ministry.

regional security

NATO member Lithuania closed its Vilnius airport and border crossing with Belarus on Sunday after objects believed to be helium balloons entered its airspace, according to the National Emergency Management Center. The break-in was the fourth such incident this week. It is also the latest in a series of drone incidents and airspace violations that have raised concerns that Russia is testing NATO.
