The first Twenty20 between Australia and India was called off due to rain in Canberra, with the tourists playing less than half their allotted overs and ending with a total of 97-1.

Shubman Gill was not out on 37 and skipper Suryakumar Yadav was unbeaten on 39 when the second and final match of the first match of the five-match series was called off after 9.4 overs on Wednesday.

India opener Abhishek Sharma had completed the 19th over with a pass from Nathan Ellis to Tim David in the middle off, but light rain stopped play for the first time and the match was shortened to 18 overs.

Gill and Yadav gave the Manuka Oval crowd at least some entertainment by smashing 54 runs in 4.4 overs before rain again hit the Australian capital.

India are the favorites to retain their T20 World Cup qualification on home soil early next year and were hoping to maintain their momentum after being eliminated in the final match of the one-day international series on Saturday.

The second match of the T20 series will be played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday.

The tourists suffered yet another injury when all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy was ruled out of the first three T20s after suffering neck spasms while recovering from a quadriceps injury sustained in the ODI series.

Batsman Shreyas Iyer suffered a splenic laceration after falling awkwardly while playing catch in the Sydney ODI last weekend and required hospital treatment.
