US President Donald Trump calls himself a pacifist. In his rhetoric, he has claimed credit for efforts to end the wars in Gaza and Ukraine. But beneath the hype, at least to date, lies a lack of substance. The problem is not a lack of effort on Trump’s part, but a lack of a proper concept. Trump is confusing “peace” with “ceasefire” and sooner or later we will return to war (usually sooner). In fact, every American president since Lyndon Johnson has been subservient to the military-industrial complex, which profits from endless wars. President Trump is simply toeing the line, avoiding…
A quick heist took place at the iconic Louvre Museum in the French capital on Sunday, with eight priceless pieces of Napoleonic-era jewelry spirited away from the second floor.Items stolen included a tiara associated with Queen Marie Amélie and Queen Hortense’s jewelry set, an emerald necklace worn by Empress Marie Louise, a large brooch belonging to Empress Eugenie, and other similar items. The international press reported on the theft with predictably dramatic twists. CNN, for example, ran a headline that read, “France’s historic jewels stolen in ‘national disaster’.” The article went on to say that, according to the Louvre, one of…

Lando Norris impressively moved to the top of the timesheets in final practice for the Mexico City Grand Prix, setting himself up for pole position in Saturday night’s qualifying session, with Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton second.Having expressed concerns about McLaren’s lap pace around the Autodromo Hermanos Rodríguez at the end of Friday’s practice, the British team and drivers certainly found something special on Saturday’s return to the track, opening up an unexpectedly large gap on the soft tires late in the session. Norris set a best lap of 1 minute 16.633 seconds. This was 0.345 seconds faster than unexpected second place…
American officials called this “bivi sitting.” This is a revolving door of the most senior members of the Trump administration trying to ensure that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, better known as “Bibi,” abides by the U.S.-brokered ceasefire agreement. This is a reversal of the narrative from a decade-old campaign ad in which Netanyahu was a “baby sitter” who watched couples’ children on date nights. The United States is now taking on that role, sending special envoys, ministers, and even the president to ensure implementation of the nascent Gaza ceasefire agreement. In other words, the “bibisitter” became a babysitter. In the…
As the so-called “coalition of the willing” meets in London to discuss a strategy to end the war in Ukraine, European leaders have vowed to work together to ratchet up pressure on Russia. Leaders called on more countries to impose sanctions on Russian oil companies after US President Donald Trump announced new sanctions targeting Russia’s two largest oil producers, Rosneft and Lukoil. In response to President Trump’s actions, the EU imposed additional sanctions and agreed to provide funding to Ukraine for the next two years. Europe is under increasing pressure to resolve the protracted conflict as Russian planes continue to…
Paris — There were no surveillance cameras monitoring the second-floor balcony where thieves entered the Louvre to steal historic jewelry worth more than $100 million, the Louvre’s director told a French Senate committee hearing. Laurence de Caer told senators on Wednesday that the east balcony of the Apollo Gallery, where robbers used an angle grinder to enter the building on Sunday, was not covered by the museum’s aging camera system. “Unfortunately, on the Apollo Gallery side, the only camera installed is facing west, so the balcony affected by the break-in is not covered,” De Cars told the hearing, as French…
