Tommy Fleetwood is backing Bolton’s Ryder Cup bids and says he will support Bolton in any way he can.
Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham confirmed on Wednesday that Mr Bolton plans to bid for the rights to host golf’s iconic tournament in 2035.
It is the first time in more than 30 years that the tournament has been held in England, the last time being held at the Bell Tower in Warwickshire in 2002.
“As a golfer, there’s nothing more special than having the Ryder Cup in England,” said Fleetwood, of Southport. “Plus it would be great to be able to do it in the North West of England, where I’m from.
“We have a lot to offer, people have a lot to offer, infrastructure has a lot to offer and I think it’s going to be incredible. I’m totally on board with that and I’d be happy to support it in any way I can!”
“Whenever the Ryder Cup is held, it is the biggest sporting event in the world and hosting it in the North West of England will be something special that we will remember forever.”
Mr Burnham outlined a commitment to pump up to £69.9m into a “significant package” of transport improvements to support the construction of the new M61-M6 link road along the Ryder Cup bus route.
Mr Burnham said: “Culture and sport will be the main drivers of our country’s positive growth, which is why we are aiming to host the biggest ever Ryder Cup in Bolton in 2035.”
“We have had positive discussions with organizers about hosting the tournament on Halton Park’s bespoke, world-class course, but that is not possible without the right infrastructure.
“We are doing everything we can to make that happen. We are pledging up to £70 million to deliver transport packages that will not only help spectators get to the venue, but will also significantly benefit people living in the surrounding areas.”
Mr Burnham described the opportunity to provide a “lasting legacy” and said a firm bid was expected to be made next month.
