British prosecutors have charged a man with attempted murder after a mass stabbing on a train.

Eleven passengers, including two passengers, were injured in an attack on a London-bound train on Saturday. The suspect was arrested when a train came to an emergency stop in the eastern English town of Huntingdon.

British Transport Police announced on Monday that Anthony Williams, from Peterborough, had been charged with 10 counts of attempted murder, one count of actual bodily harm and one count of possession of a knife in connection with the train attack.

Police said the 32-year-old was also charged with attempted murder and separate charges of possessing a knife in connection with a separate incident at Pontoon Dock Transport Station on Saturday, adding that investigators were “looking into possible other related offenses”.

Police said the stabbing was not being treated as a “terrorist act.”

Mr Williams is due to appear at Peterborough Magistrates Court on Monday.

Transport Minister Heidi Alexander said Monday that the suspect was not known to authorities.

“I can tell you he was not known to the counter-terrorism police. He was not known to the security services,” Alexander told Times Radio, adding that he could not comment on whether the man was known to mental health services.

At around 7:40pm (7:40pm GMT) on Saturday, police were alerted to an emergency on board a train between Doncaster, a town in northeast England, and London’s usually busy King’s Cross station.

British Transport Police said officers responded within eight minutes of the first emergency call.

The train stopped at Huntingdon station in Cambridgeshire, but armed police backed by patrol cars, a fleet of ambulances and two air ambulances swarmed the station in the eastern England market town.

Passengers described scenes of panic as bloodied travelers fled the train.

A knife was recovered at the scene and CCTV footage reviewed by detectives showed train crew members intervening to stop the attacker.

“He literally put himself in a dangerous situation,” Alexander said. “There are people who are still alive today because of his actions.”

The railway employee is in serious but stable condition and has been hospitalized.
