Teenager Lexi Potter scored the winning goal against Brighton in her first senior start, helping Chelsea leapfrog Manchester United into second place in the Women’s Super League.

The defending champions rubbed salt in the wound by defeating United in the League Cup final on Sunday, clinching a point in the WSL with a 2-1 win at Kingsmeadow.

Potter, a 19-year-old graduate of Cobham Academy, was one of three substitutes from the team that lifted the trophy at the weekend and produced an impressive performance in midfield.

Chelsea players celebrate Alyssa Thompson’s opening goal against Brighton

She scored life from close range in the 39th minute after great touches from Aggie Beaver-Jones and Alyssa Thompson, making it a match to remember.

The two teams had already exchanged goals to level the score at 1-1, with Thompson scoring the first goal with a header and just three minutes later Carla Camacho’s shot was spilled.

Mark Skinner’s United drew 0-0 with second-bottom West Ham, despite several chances for the visiting side.
