Chelsea’s 34-game unbeaten run in the WSL came to an abrupt end with a shock 1-0 defeat to Everton.
The Toffees are without a win in their last eight league games, their most recent victory coming against Liverpool on the opening day of the season, but Honoka Hayashi’s goal after 12 minutes sealed a historic victory.
It was the Blues’ first defeat in the WSL since May 2024 and the first under manager Sonia Bompastre. Due to his failure to score a goal, his streak of scoring in 31 consecutive league games came to an end.
Chelsea took control from the start and threatened to take the lead when Courtney Brosnan brilliantly deflected Katarina Macario’s low shot onto the right post, but they were behind within 12 minutes when Toni Payne’s smart ball from beyond the six-yard box was converted by Hayashi.
From there, the Toffees were able to keep the hosts at arm’s length. They sacrificed their own attacking intent and worked incredibly hard to do so, holding Chelsea to just 0.49 xG throughout the first half.
As the reality of a rare defeat drew closer and closer, chances came closer and closer for Bompastre’s team, but it didn’t work out for them. And woodwork remained their enemy.
First, Alyssa Thompson fired a shot inches wide of the right upright after Sandy Baltimore’s corner kick was hit off the post by an Everton defender. Then the duo of Brosnan and Martina Fernandes managed to get a shot off the line.
Substitute Vike Kaptein hit a header over the crossbar and with seconds remaining, Baltimore smashed a free kick over the bar and Everton almost snatched the ball back before the final whistle.

Manchester United beat West Ham 2-1 at Leigh Sports Village, with Dominic Jansen scoring the winning goal in the second half to return to the top three.
