Emma Laducanu has withdrawn from the Miami Open due to illness.

The 23-year-old British No. 1 enters the second round of the tournament, which begins on Tuesday, as a 24th seed with a bye.

However, Raducanu is still recovering from symptoms following a viral infection he contracted in the Middle East last month and made the decision on Monday to withdraw from the tournament.

The 2021 US Open champion competed in Indian Wells earlier this month, losing to Amanda Anisimova 6-1, 6-1 in the third round.

After losing in 52 minutes, Raducanu admitted he couldn’t muster enough strength to compete with the two-time Grand Slam finalist.

Who is Raducanu’s coach?

Laducanu worked with coach Mark Petchey at Indian Wells

In January, news broke that Raducanu was looking for his 10th coach in the past five years after parting ways with Francis Roig following his early withdrawal from the Australian Open.

Raducanu announced that he had ended his partnership with Roig, who helped Rafael Nadal win 16 of his 22 Grand Slam titles, after less than six months.

She has been supported by LTA coach Alexis Kanter since parting ways with Spaniard Roig, but was also reunited with Mark Petchey at Indian Wells.

Thirteen months is the longest period Raducanu has spent with the same coach since his breakthrough at Wimbledon in 2021 and spectacular victory at the US Open later that year.

Emma Raducanu’s nine coaches

nigel sears

Sears, known for coaching former top five players Amanda Coetzer, Daniela Hantuchova, Anet Kontaveit and Ana Ivanovic, joined the team in April 2021 and oversaw an incredible run to the fourth round of Wimbledon.

andrew richardson

He led Raducanu to a historic Grand Slam title in qualifying for the US Open. Raducanu chose not to extend his trial contract immediately after his win.

Torben Belz

Angelique Kerber’s tenure as coach lasted just five months. They disbanded in April 2022 and Raducanu moved to a new training model that included LTA coaching support.

Dmitry Tursunov

Radukanu faced the ex-pro on a trial basis in the summer of 2022, but Tursunov later decided not to proceed as he felt there were red flags within his camp that could not be ignored for a long-term commitment.

sebastian sax

The German joined at the end of 2022, but the partnership was terminated after Raducanu required multiple surgeries, leading to a mutual split.

nick cavaday

The 14-month period was her longest professional partnership and helped her return to the top 60 before stepping down in early 2025 due to personal health issues.

Vlad Platnik

Although piloted in March 2025, the partnership lasted only 14 days.

mark petchey

Andy Murray’s former coach provided vital tactical knowledge despite putting in an encouraging performance at Wimbledon against world number one Aryna Sabalenka.

Francisco Roig

The former coach of Rafael Nadal, who was appointed in August 2025, provided elite tactical clarity, but after withdrawing from the Australian Open in January 2026, Raducanu announced his breakup.

Maria and Henman of Radukanu

Sky Sports’ Tim Henman and Martina Navratilova discuss whether Emma Raducanu needs to commit to a long-term coach and improve her physical ability off the court to reach her full potential

Raducanu returned to competitive tennis at the United Cup in January, but suffered the first loss of her career to Maria Sakkari, and subsequently revealed that her ongoing injury kept her out of action for two and a half months.

Her preparations for the Australian Open suffered another blow after losing 6-2, 6-4 to Tayla Preston in the quarter-finals of the Hobart International, but she got off to a winning start a few days later at Melbourne Park.

Radukanu, seeded 28th in the first Grand Slam of the year, defeated Manachaya Sawankaeo in the first round of the Australian Open, but lost in straight sets to Anastasia Potapova in the second round.

Raducanu admits she ran out of energy after losing badly to Solana Cirstea in the Transylvania Open final, talks about LTA coach Alexis Kanter’s influence on her game

Raducanu lost in the Transylvania Open final to local favorite Sorana Cirstea in straight sets, missing out on a chance to win her first title since winning the US Open in 2021.

Top-seeded Raducanu was feeling the effects of defeating Ukraine’s Oleksandra Olnikova in the marathon semi-final in Cluj, then losing 6-0, 6-2 to Cirstea in just over an hour.

She then played world No. 80 Camila Osorio in the first round of the Qatar Open and retired due to illness just two days after losing in the final of the Transylvania Open.

Raducanu had time to prepare for the tournament, but lost her last six matches to lucky loser Antonia Ruzic 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 in the opening round of the Dubai Tennis Championships.

At Indian Wells, she easily defeated Anastasia Zakharova in the second round, losing to two-time Grand Slam runner-up Anisimova in 52 minutes.

Highlights of Raducanu’s historic victory at the 2021 US Open

So far, winning the 2021 US Open is Raducanu’s only major success. She reached the fourth round at Wimbledon that year. This feat was achieved in 2024 and might have been better had he not been injured, but he has never advanced beyond the third round at the Australian Open or French Open.
