World Cup-winning England head coach John Mitchell has signed a long-term contract with the Red Roses.
Mitchell led England to World Cup glory in 2025 and will lead them to victory at the next World Cup.
During Mitchell’s tenure, the Red Roses achieved 25 consecutive wins, two Women’s Six Nations Grand Slams, two WXV 1 titles and their first World Cup victory in 11 years.
The Red Roses also established themselves as No. 1 in the world under coach Mitchell, with a ranking of 98.09 points, the highest ever for either a women’s or men’s team.
“I am delighted to be able to extend my time with the Red Roses,” he said. “This extension provides continuity across the World Cup cycle and allows us to operate the program with a clear long-term vision.
“The past three years have been both challenging and rewarding, with individuals within the Red Roses achieving success at the highest level while ensuring credibility. This period has helped establish strong standards, clarity of purpose, greater connections and a winning culture.
“This emerging group has the opportunity to continue to lead our game globally. By driving higher standards and continually seeking new performance improvements, this program can build on what is already in place and drive new trends.”
“However, the immediate focus is on 2026. There is a strong sense within the group that there is an unfinished opportunity and that will shape our preparation, training approach and continued efforts to raise the bottom as we build hunger in the dynasty.”
Emily Scarratt, England Women’s all-time top scorer, will take command of the attack and support the coach in the 2026 Six Nations. The 35-year-old has ended her glittering playing career following her World Cup success. Scarratt will continue in his role as assistant coach at PWR club Loughborough Lightning.
Mitchell will also be supported by forwards coach Lewis Deacon and defense coach Sarah Hunter, while Lou Meadows will leave his role as attack coach.
RFU Executive Director of Performance Rugby Conor O’Shea said: “We’re all delighted that ‘Mitch’ is committed to the next cycle. If anything, he’s motivated to see the Red Roses become a better version of themselves.”
“He has built the Red Roses’ culture and brought success on the biggest stage. And just as importantly, he is deeply committed to growing the team’s tradition while creating something that will last beyond his role as coach.”
