Tierno Barry continued his scoring spree with a second-half equalizer as Everton drew 1-1 at home to Leeds.
After scoring just once in his first 18 league appearances, Barry scored his fourth goal in five top-flight games with an equalizer in the 76th minute.
Everton were unable to take the lead as Idrissa Gueye hit the bar just two minutes after Barry’s goal, extending the Toffees’ winless run to five games and moving them into the top half of the table.
Meanwhile, 16th-placed Leeds are six points above the table and have only won once in the away league this season.
The goal for David Moyes’ side, which looked unlikely at half-time, made Leeds “look like Real Madrid”, as Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher said Everton made Leeds “look like Real Madrid”.
James Justin scored in the 28th minute from Anton Stach’s cross to give the visitors a deserved lead.
Six minutes later, in his first game against Everton since joining Leeds on a free transfer in the summer, Dominic Calvert-Lewin almost came close to haunting Everton when he hit the post.
Everton were booed at half-time after failing to get a shot on target, while Leeds had 10 shots in the first half.
Moyes responded by making double substitutions of Jarrad Branthwaite and Keiynan Dewsbury-Hall at half-time to match Leeds’ last three, and it worked.
The home side were left in shock as Barry slotted home from Guyet’s cross to deny Leeds their first league win of the season.
Moyes: “Subs made the difference”
Everton manager David Moyes told Sky Sports:
“It’s really disappointing that the way we played in the first half and our set-up in general didn’t go as well as we hoped. We were much better in the second half. We hung in there.
“It didn’t look like we were going to get a goal, but we managed to get one at the end. It was a little disappointing not to get the second goal.”
On half-time substitutions: “I was hoping we didn’t play worse than we did in the first half. Leeds had a lot of the ball up front and I didn’t think we could compete well and it wasn’t like us. We were missing a bit of something throughout that could have made a difference.
“We’ve got a lot of players on their way back, but none of them were fit to start. Jarrad (Branthwaite) and Keenan (Dewsbury-Hall) may have come on a little bit early, but we needed to do something and try to make a change. They came on and certainly made a difference.”
On Tierno Barry’s form: “If you’re a centre-forward you have to score goals, but he hasn’t done that from the beginning. He’s playing better. He’s getting more used to us. He’s training better. It’s not always the answer, but if you train well and get used to things, you have a better chance of scoring goals.”
Falke: “We should have ended the game in the first half”
Leeds manager Daniel Farke told Sky Sports:
“It’s a good result for a promoted team. Everton is a difficult place to come to, especially in the second half. It’s definitely a good result.”
“It’s a bit disappointing because we weren’t far from winning. I think we had a great performance in the first half. We were very dominant and didn’t give our opponents any chances and we should have scored the second goal.”
“We should have ended the game in the first half.
“With the quality that Everton were able to bring, it was always clear that they were going to show up at some point in this game.
“In the second half they had more possession, but instinct was that we were still controlling the game on the ball. Karl Darlow made one good save and they hit the crossbar, but other than that it was just a goal.”
“Overall it was a good performance from the players and we got some good points.”
Could Leeds cause problems for Arsenal?
Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher talks about whether Leeds can beat Arsenal at Elland Road on Saturday.
“How many problems will Arsenal cause them? They (Arsenal) went to Everton, a team of a similar level, and won 1-0 there.”
“If Arsenal go to Leeds and win, it could be by the odd goal. They’re not going to score a ton of goals. They rely on set pieces.
“Through that fact, I think Leeds should stay in the game as long as possible, even if they are losing 1-0. The atmosphere has caused Leeds a lot of big injuries. I think it will be a really tough game for Arsenal.”
“I expect them to win, but it’s only because of the odd goal.”
