US President Donald Trump spent 104 minutes in the White House press room listing his accomplishments on the one-year anniversary of the start of his second term.
President Trump began his press conference by showing a stack of photos of people arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Minneapolis. Minneapolis has been the site of large-scale raids, counter-protests, and even the shooting death of an American citizen by ICE agents.

In front of a large crowd of reporters, President Trump continued to emphasize the policies he has introduced since taking office in January 2025. At times he stuck to the prepared text, but often digressed on related or unrelated issues, and sometimes repeated his statements multiple times.
Trump also fielded questions, many of which focused on foreign policy, including efforts to acquire Greenland, establishing a “peace commission” to oversee reconstruction of Gaza, and the state of the Venezuelan government after the U.S. abduction of then-leader Nicolas Maduro.
The press conference took place the day before President Trump was scheduled to depart for the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

“Everyone was saying, ‘Oh, tariffs are going to cause inflation,'” Trump said of the economy. There is no inflation. There is almost no inflation. ”
To mark the first anniversary of the Trump administration, we looked at a wide range of price data from the past year and found that while prices for some specific items, such as eggs and gasoline, have fallen, overall prices are still rising.
immigration
On immigration, President Trump said his administration is prioritizing the deportation of criminals. “We’re focused on murderers and drug dealers,” he said.
President Trump deported between 300,000 and 600,000 people in his first year in office. The government does not release detailed data on deportations, so it is unclear how many of them have criminal records.
However, according to US media reports, about 74% of the approximately 70,000 immigrants held in immigration detention facilities have no criminal convictions.
investment
During the press conference, Trump repeated inaccurate claims he had made in the past. He said the United States had “secured a record $18 trillion in new investment commitments.”
The White House website has shown the $9.6 trillion figure since mid-November. Moreover, experts have warned PolitiFact that some parts of the $9.6 trillion pledge may never materialize, while others are unrealistically large compared to the gross domestic products of the countries involved.
gasoline price
President Trump also said gas prices are “$1.99 in many states.” The national average price per gallon in the second week of January 2026 was $2.78, compared to $3.11 in January 2025.
No state had an average price below $2. Oklahoma had the lowest average price in mid-January at $2.34 per gallon.
As of January 20, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas and Wyoming had at least seven stations selling gas for $2 or less, and a handful of other states had one to four stations selling gas for $2 or less, according to gas pricing app Gas Buddy.

President Trump said that under his predecessor, Joe Biden, “a quarter of the jobs added were in government.”
This is an exaggeration. In four years, the economy added more than 16 million jobs, about 1.8 million of which were in federal, state, or local government jobs. This is approximately 11% of the total.
The economy added more than 2 million jobs in Biden’s final year in office, compared to 473,000 in 2025 under Trump.
Fentanyl overdose
President Trump said 300,000 people died from fentanyl overdose last year, far more than the latest federal data.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that in the 12 months ending in August 2025, approximately 69,000 people died in the United States from overdoses of all types of drugs, not just fentanyl.

Mr. Trump repeatedly claimed that he had “ended eight endless wars in 10 months,” an exaggerated claim similar to the one we rated as “Mostly False.” He also said that “probably no president has solved a single war,” which we rated as “False.”
