Fitbit’s new Gemini-powered Health Coach was announced in August and will be available in public preview on Android for premium subscribers in the US starting tomorrow. It will also expand to iOS later this year.
As AI competition heats up, Google is counting on its Gemini AI assistant to help Fitbit stand out from the crowd. This feature, called “Coach,” is designed to act as an all-in-one fitness trainer, sleep coach, and health and wellness advisor.

At a recent Made by Google event, Google introduced a variety of features in Coach, including a way to create custom routines based on your goals, preferences, and available equipment.
For example, if you want to run long distances without getting tired, your coach will create a customized fitness plan with suggestions and achievable goals. During your workout, adjust your exercise plan in real time based on your feedback to stay on track. Also, if you get injured later in the week, the AI will change your plan accordingly.
Other features include analyzing your sleep habits and providing insights on how to improve your sleep quality in the long term.
While we’re focused on Coach, the Fitbit app has also been updated with a sleek, easy-to-navigate design organized around four main tabs: Today, Fitness, Sleep, and Health.

Google has released demo videos explaining each tab on its Made by Google channel on YouTube. For example, the (Today) tab acts as the app’s central hub, highlighting important metrics, weekly cardio load data, and other relevant stats you’ll want to see right away. You can manually customize the metrics displayed at any time.

Meanwhile, the Fitness tab shows your workout plan and key metrics like your cardio goal and average weekly step count. However, please note that some features, such as nutrition tracking and menstrual cycle tracking, are not yet available.

Additionally, the (Sleep) tab lets you track your sleep patterns with new features that provide AI Coach insights to improve your sleep quality. The sleep summary at the bottom of the tab aggregates all information from last night’s sleep, including whether you were awake for long periods of time during the night.

The Health tab is dedicated to key metrics, providing quick access to vital signs such as breathing rate, blood oxygen saturation, and resting heart rate, providing a comprehensive overview of your health.
To preview Coach on Android, you need an active Fitbit Premium subscription and a compatible Fitbit smartwatch, tracker, or Pixel Watch.
