Microsoft’s The GitHub division on Tuesday announced Agent HQ, a new “mission control” interface that allows software developers to manage coding agents from multiple vendors on a single platform.

Artificial intelligence agents are tools that can independently complete tasks on your behalf. Several companies, including GitHub, have built and released popular agents designed specifically for programming.

These agents give developers a variety of new features at their fingertips, but tracking them all individually can require a lot of effort, said GitHub COO Kyle Daigle.

Developers use GitHub, OpenAI, googlehumanity, xAI, and cognitive capabilities in one place with Agent HQ.

“We want to bring some order to the chaos of innovation,” Daigle said in an interview with CNBC. “Because there are so many different agents, there are so many different ways to initiate these asynchronous tasks. So our big opportunity here is to unify all of these.”

Agent HQ users will have access to a command center where they can assign, manipulate, and monitor the work of multiple agents.

This means you can see what your agents are working on and correct course in real time if they get off track.

While the third-party agent will begin rolling out to GitHub Copilot subscribers in the coming months, Copilot Pro+ users will be able to access OpenAI Codex with VS Code Insiders this week, the company said.

GitHub was acquired by Microsoft in 2018 and allows users to store, share, and collaborate on code. The company says its platform currently supports more than 180 million developers and is growing at its fastest rate ever.

“This is a rich time for AI, and we just want to make sure that richness doesn’t turn into chaos,” Daigle said. “We’re making sure you have a great experience using all of these tools through our very open GitHub platform.”
