An explosion that struck the western Ukrainian city of Lviv early Sunday killed at least one person and injured dozens more in what authorities labeled a “terrorist attack.”
The Lviv District Prosecutor’s Office said the explosion occurred as police responded to an emergency call about a break-in at a store near the city center.
The first incident occurred after police arrived at the scene, and another occurred after a second member arrived, the paper said.
Prosecutors said the attack killed a 23-year-old female police officer and damaged a police car and a civilian vehicle.
The Lviv District Prosecutor’s Office said it had opened an investigation into a “terrorist act that caused serious consequences,” but added that the circumstances were unclear.
“This is definitely an act of terrorism,” Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovy said in a Facebook post.
Authorities have not yet identified the person suspected of carrying out the attack.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian capital Kiev was hit by a combination of missile and drone attacks overnight into Sunday. Explosions were heard in the city following a ballistic missile warning.
