Two people were killed and seven others injured in an Israeli attack in southern Lebanon, a day after Israel threatened to escalate attacks on alleged Hezbollah targets.

The Lebanese Ministry of Health announced on Monday that one person was killed and seven others injured in an Israeli attack on the town of Douair in Nabatiyeh region.

Another attack also left one person dead in the border town of Aita al-Shaab in Bint Jubail district.

Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) reported that three missiles were fired at a car in Douair, causing a fire that spread to nearby vehicles and shopping facilities.

Firefighters worked to extinguish the fire, while emergency workers removed debris and broken glass from the damaged store, AFP news agency reported.

The Israeli military announced that it had killed Mohammed Ali Hadid, who was said to have been the commander of Hezbollah’s Radwan special forces, which was attempting to “rebuild Hezbollah’s terrorist infrastructure base” in the Nabatiyeh region.

The Israeli military claimed that another Hezbollah member was killed in Aita al-Shaab while “attempting to gather intelligence regarding the Israeli military.”

The Israeli shelling came despite a November 2024 ceasefire agreement aimed at ending cross-border clashes that have continued for more than a year. But in recent days, Israeli officials have vowed to step up military operations.

On Sunday, Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz warned that Hezbollah was “playing with fire” and accused the Lebanese president of “dragging his feet” over efforts to rein in the group.

Weakened by the protracted conflict, Hezbollah faces growing international pressure to disarm. The US has urged Lebanon to pursue direct negotiations with Israel, with US special envoy Tom Barrack saying the US was “encouraging negotiations”.

Lebanese Health Ministry announced on Saturday that four people were killed in an Israeli airstrike in Nabatiyeh.

President Joseph Aoun accused Israel of “responding to calls for peace with stepped-up air strikes.”

The Israeli attack has raised fears of a new escalation between Israel and Hezbollah, as a fragile ceasefire looks increasingly pointless.
