Meta brings AI-developed short video feed to Europe

Meta announced Thursday that Vibes, a short-form video feed of AI-generated videos, will launch in Europe on the Meta AI app. Think TikTok or Instagram Reels. But all the videos you see are generated by AI.

The rollout comes six weeks after Meta introduced the feed in the US. Days after launching Meta, OpenAI released Sora, a social media platform for creating and sharing AI-generated videos.

Vibes lets you create and share short-form AI-generated videos, and access a dedicated feed that shows other users’ AI videos. Over time, Meta says, the feed will become more personalized to the user’s interests.

When creating content, you can use prompts to generate videos or remix other people’s videos. Add new visuals, layer music, and adjust the style to suit your personal tastes.

“This is an inherently social and collaborative experience, where you are encouraged to remix, co-create, and build stories with your friends,” Mehta wrote in a blog post. “Videos and content can be shared and posted directly to your Vibes feed, sent to friends, or cross-posted to Stories and Reels on Instagram and Facebook.”

When Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the feed in September, user comments on his announcement post were predictable, especially since no one really wants an AI-generated version of TikTok.

One of the top comments on the post was, “Gang, no one wants this,” while another popular comment was, “Bro is posting AI on his app.” Another comment read: “I think I speak for everyone when I say: What….?”

While Meta embraces AI-generated content, companies like YouTube are trying to crack down on the issue as the rise of AI technology floods social media platforms with AI slop (a term used to describe low-quality AI content).

Meta’s debut of Vibes is especially puzzling given that the company announced earlier this year that it was working on “unoriginal” content and advising creators to focus on “authentic storytelling” rather than short videos that have little value.

Despite previous messages, Meta touted the launch of Vibes and said that media generation on the Meta AI app has surged more than 10x since its launch.
