microsoft announced Tuesday that it is bringing together an engineering group for a Copilot assistant for commercial and consumer use that is not yet widely available.

Jacob Andreu, former snap An executive who works in Microsoft’s artificial intelligence division will become executive vice president of consumer and commercial CoPilot experiences, CEO Satya Nadella said in a memo to employees.

Andreu reports to Nadella. Executives Ryan Rozlansky, Perry Clark and Charles Lamanna, who also report to Nadella, will lead Microsoft 365 applications and the Copilot platform, Nadella wrote.

The co-pilot’s move means the release of executive Mustafa Suleiman, a former co-founder of AI research institute DeepMind. google Purchased in 2014 to further focus on building new models.

“The next step in this plan is to focus all of our energy on our superintelligence efforts and restructure our organization to deliver a world-class model for Microsoft over the next five years,” Suleiman wrote in the memo. “These models allow us to build enterprise-tailored lineages that help improve all products across the company.”

Since joining Microsoft through the Inflection deal in 2024, Suleyman has spent his time working on consumer-facing Copilot, among other initiatives.

Microsoft’s Copilot app had 6 million daily active users in December, compared to 392 million for ChatGPT and 62 million for Gemini, according to data from app analytics firm Sensor Tower.

Microsoft incorporates generative AI models from Anthropic and OpenAI, but OpenAI’s own ChatGPT assistant is more widely used by consumers than Microsoft’s Copilot.

Approximately 3% of commercial users with a subscription to Office productivity software have access to the Microsoft 365 Copilot add-on. There is also Google Competitive Gemini assistant across the board.

In November, Microsoft announced the creation of a super intelligence group under Suleiman. Suleiman said on Tuesday that developing frontier models has always been his main focus and passion.

He said he will “continue to be directly involved in much of the day-to-day operations” of the broader Microsoft AI group, which includes products such as the Bing search engine.

Web analytics firm StatCounter estimates that Google had 90% of the search engine market share in February, compared to Bing’s roughly 5%.

“We are not only doubling down on our superintelligence mission with the talent and computing power to build models that impact real products in terms of evaluation and COGS reduction, but we are also moving the frontier forward in meeting enterprise needs and achieving the next set of research breakthroughs,” Nadella wrote.

The transformation comes amid increasing pressure on software companies to demonstrate returns from AI investments, as investors worry that the model could put pressure on software incumbents.

of iShares expands technology and software sector exchange-traded fund is down about 19% so far this year, and Microsoft is down 17% in that period.

Microsoft is building models for inference that generate source code, images, audio, and come up with answers that people can find more thoughtfully, but that requires more time, Suleiman said.

At the same time, Microsoft will continue to leverage OpenAI’s intellectual property. Microsoft announced in October that it would retain the intellectual property rights to OpenAI models and products until 2032.

“I’m really excited about this change because most of the future value is going to be in the model layer. My job is to help COGS create a highly optimized, highly efficient, enterprise-specific model lineage for Microsoft over the next three to five years,” Suleyman said in an interview, using the acronym for cost of goods sold. “Because the model is the product, that’s the only purpose, right? That’s the future direction of all IP.”
