Ten-man Newcastle won 2-1 thanks to a sublime goal from substitute William Osula in the 90th minute, handing manager Michael Carrick his first defeat as Manchester United manager.
Eddie Howe’s side overcame adversity with Jacob Ramsey’s controversial first-half sending off to end a three-game losing streak in the home league, conceding an apparent dive following a challenge from visiting goalkeeper Senne Ramens.
In a chaotic first-half stoppage time that started with Ramsey’s second yellow, Anthony Gordon converted a penalty from Bruno Fernandes to put Newcastle ahead, but the captain put Casemiro back on his feet and United quickly equalized.
Manchester United looked to be benefiting from a second successive red card, but it was Newcastle who posed more danger as Carrick’s side had a disastrous second half. This is not at all surprising.
It was Carrick’s first setback, but it showed the vulnerability he had shown in his last three games at Newcastle. Doubt inevitably creeps in. Defeat against Howe, whom Roy Keane has opted to take over in the summer, may not help Carrick.
Newcastle needed a few top saves from Aaron Ramsdale, who was selected ahead of Nick Pope, to stay in the game until Osla, who has barely played this season, made his first substitute appearance to score the winning goal in the 90th minute against Manchester United in the Premier League.
Manchester United remained third despite suffering their first defeat under Carrick, who won six of his first seven games, after Champions League rivals Aston Villa suffered a 4-1 defeat at Chelsea. Meanwhile, Newcastle have moved up to 12th place.
Carrick ‘deeply disappointed’ at Manchester United’s lack of quality
Manchester United manager Michael Carrick told TNT Sports.
“I’m not happy with the way we played tonight, it was pretty much in our hands but that’s credit to Newcastle.
“We knew it was going to be a tough game because of the way they approached the game. We went into the game feeling like we could advance, but we didn’t. It was very disappointing.”
“I don’t think it was 10 guys. I don’t think we played well enough tonight. There’s no excuse for that. We’re all responsible for that and we know it.”
“Why was there a lack of character? It wasn’t. It was just quality and performance. Not character. We wanted to win. When you don’t win a football game, it’s easy to throw it away.”
“We weren’t there in terms of quality. Credit to Newcastle. They deserved to win tonight. It pains me to say that, but it is what it is. We need to get back to work and get better for the next game.”
“We lost one game and didn’t play well enough, but overall we’re in a good position.”
Howe praises Newcastle’s mental strength
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe told TNT Sport:
“We played really well in the first half. We were very fluid with the ball and got back to playing together as a team and playing partnerships.”
“Aside from the last part, I was really happy. I felt we deserved to score first at half-time. Then they scored from a free-kick, which personally didn’t even feel like a free-kick.
“It was one of those days where it was easy for the players to feel sorry for themselves at half-time, especially after the recent good results.
“It really took a collective mental strength to come back together and produce the second half.”
Osra wins: Best feeling ever
Newcastle’s match winner Will Osla told TNT Sport:
“That was the best feeling ever. I was so happy for that. You know, when I went out there, I just prayed that I could score and make something happen, and I thanked God that it happened.”
“Yesterday in training, I was practicing at the finish. If I get a chance, I’ll cut in and score. So I’m glad that my hard work paid off.”
Howe contributes to Newcastle’s ‘outstanding’ win
Clinton Morrison’s Soccer Feature:
“Newcastle have achieved that because they have a great manager in Eddie Howe, who will become England’s manager when Thomas Tuchel leaves.
“The players will run through a brick wall for the coach and they were outstanding tonight.
“When the pressure is on, you look at whether the players are still playing under the coach. They are still playing under the coach, 100 per cent.”
“Manchester United were never good enough.”
Opta stats: Super sub Osla makes PL history
Newcastle United’s Jacob Ramsey has become the first player in the Premier League to receive a second yellow card for simulation since Spurs’ Yves Bissouma against Luton in October 2023. William Osla became the eighth player to score a Premier League winning goal for Newcastle as a 90th minute substitute, and the first player to score the winning goal for any club in the Premier League against Manchester United. This is only the 10th time Manchester United have lost in the league. The winning goal in the 90th minute of a Premier League match. Eight of those goals have come in the past four seasons.
