Newcastle goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale saved three penalties in the shootout, and the home and away sides scored equalizers in the 95th and 122nd minutes respectively, resulting in a 3-3 draw and eliminating Bournemouth from the FA Cup.
The England international saved spot-kicks from Evanilsson, Alex Jimenez and eventually Bafode Diakité, to the delight of St James’ Park after a brief classic display that saw him score six goals, four lead changes and take 45 shots in 120 minutes.
Bournemouth appeared to have made a shock comeback in the second half as two goals in six minutes from Alex Scott and David Brooks canceled out Harvey Barnes’ opener for Newcastle.
However, the Magpies had the last laugh in regular time when Djorde Petrovic was fouled in the box in the 95th minute and Anthony Gordon converted a penalty, sending the game into extra time.
At the end of a frenzied 30 minutes of extra time, Gordon was once again a key figure and 118 minutes later his pinpoint cross found Harvey Barnes, who slotted home at the back post for his second goal of the game. He looked like his team had won the game, but Marcus Tavernier capitalized on a mistake by Sven Botman and incredibly equalized in extra time.
The drama – somehow – wasn’t over yet when Barnes fired a wonderful ball across the face of goal and Gordon almost scored with the final kick of the match.
The result saw Newcastle advance to the fourth round of the FA Cup, along with five other Premier League teams, after holders Crystal Palace were eliminated by Macclesfield in the biggest upset in FA Cup history.
How Newcastle beat thriller to reach FA Cup fourth round
Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola shuffled his squad, but Eli Junior Crupi was one of the five players he retained. He scored his first try on goal in the fifth minute, running down Enes Unal and firing a shot into Ramsdale’s stomach.
But the hosts would have gone ahead two minutes later had keeper Djordje Petrovic not been able to claw away Ioan Ouissa’s curled shot after Nick Woltemaid parried Barnes’ deft flick.
In the 29th minute of the game, Ramsdale’s Evanilsson, who came on as a substitute for the injured Unal, used his first touch to set up Crupi’s shot, but the Cherries calmed down and the game entered a lull.
Sandro Tonali fired wide from distance and the Scot saw his shot from a narrow angle blocked, but the half-time whistle approached with little chance of an opening goal.
The situation was resolved within five minutes of restart. Burns fed Waltemaed, who ran into the penalty area to collect the Germany international’s return pass and slip the ball past the advancing Petrovic.
Bournemouth should have equalized within two minutes. Tino Livramento tried to pick out Malick Thiau with the ball beyond his own penalty area, but instead found Evanilsson, who thanked Ramsdale for coming to his rescue.
Ramsdale were only able to fend off Crupi’s piledriver from an offside position, but Evanilson forced the ball into the net after 55 minutes, before Sven Botman was unlucky to extend the Magpies’ lead when substitute Lewis Hall’s header from a corner kick hit the underside of the bar.
Evanilsson and Brooks exchanged passes, with the former slotting in a cross at the far post, which the Scot tapped in for the goal, with Iraola’s side taking full advantage within seconds. The visitors had another chance when Brooks slipped in behind Kieran Trippier. An attempted pass by Botman was blocked, but the midfielder took a superb shot from the rebound and sent it past Ramsdale.
Petrovic twice thwarted Gordon’s shots, the second time finishing brilliantly as time expired, but the former Everton man finally scored the spot goal in stoppage time after the keeper had brought down Tonali.
Burns thought he had won the game when he headed in Gordon’s deep cross towards the end of the extra 30 minutes, but Tavernier’s sixth goal of the game ensured the game went to penalties.
