Patrick Mahomes led the Kansas City Chiefs to a dominant 28-7 victory over the Washington Commanders on Monday night, snapping their ninth straight victory over their opponent.
Patrick Mahomes rushed for 299 yards and three touchdowns, Kareem Hunt found the end zone twice and the Chiefs’ defense helped them break away from a halftime tie for a comfortable win at Arrowhead Stadium.
One of Mahomes’ touchdown passes went to Travis Kelce, who tied Priest Holmes for a Chiefs career record with 83 points, and the other went to Laci Rice, who caught nine passes for 93 yards in his second game back from a six-game suspension.
The victory gave the Chiefs (5-3) their fourth win in five games and extended their advantage over the Commanders to nine straight wins and 11 of 12 overall.
“I think this shows our growth as a team,” Mahomes said. “Offensively, we didn’t get off to a great start, but we overcame adversity and proved we can play the brand of soccer we want to play.”
Marcus Mariota, who started in place of injured Jayden Daniels, passed for 213 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions against the Commanders (3-5), who fell to 1-4 on the road this season.
Terry McLaurin returned from quad trouble and caught three passes for 54 yards, but aggravated the injury late in the game. Deebo Samuel also returned from a heel bruise but had only three catches.
Kansas City marched 72 yards for a touchdown, and the leaders responded with a 66-yard drive that finished with a touchdown reception by McLaurin, which was initially ruled incomplete but was overturned on review.
The decisive blow came midway through the fourth quarter, when the Chiefs finally defeated the Commanders with a 13-play, 94-yard drive.
Rice came close to scoring twice early in the game before finishing the game with an 18-yard touchdown reception.
