The Los Angeles County District Attorney announced Tuesday that Nick Reiner will be charged with two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances in connection with the brutal murders of his parents, prominent Hollywood directors Rob Reiner and Michelle Singer Reiner.
Nick Reiner, 32, could be sentenced to up to life in prison without parole if convicted of the murders that took place in his parents’ home.
“These are some of the most serious charges that the DA’s office can bring against anyone,” Prosecutor Nathan Hockman said at a news conference.
Hochman did not discuss a motive for the killing. He said the murder weapon Nick Reiner allegedly used was a knife.
On Monday, President Donald Trump suggested, without evidence, that the couple was killed because of the “outrage” Rob Reiner caused in others by opposing Trump and his policies.
Nick Reiner is being held without bail.
He has faced long-standing issues with substance abuse and even experienced a period of homelessness in his youth.
Hochman said the special circumstances that are part of the charges relate to the fact that the alleged crimes involved multiple murders.
