President Donald Trump signed a bill Wednesday directing the Justice Department to release all records collected by federal prosecutors during the sex trafficking investigation and prosecution of Jeffrey Epstein and his accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell.
Trump’s signing marks a stunning reversal by the president, primarily aimed at quelling a burgeoning Republican insurrection and restoring iron control over the party.
Under the language of the law, the Justice Department must release the Epstein files within 30 days. But there are some bylaws in the law’s text that allow some files to be withheld. And the announcement of a new investigation into Epstein’s contacts raises big questions about how the Trump administration will respond.
Trump’s name is listed on the file. He and Epstein were colleagues and appeared together many times before falling out. However, there is no file implicating Trump in any wrongdoing.
