A man and a woman were taken to the hospital after a federal agent was involved in a shooting Thursday afternoon in Portland, Oregon, according to Portland police.
The shooting occurred a day after a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer shot and killed 37-year-old Renee Nicole Goode as she drove away in an SUV in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
“This case is still in its early stages,” Portland Police Chief Bob Day said in a statement, but officers declined to say which federal agency was involved in the shooting or what led up to it.
“We understand that many people are feeling emotional and tense in the wake of the shooting in Minneapolis, but we ask members of the community to remain calm as we work to find out more,” Day said.
According to multiple media outlets, the FBI’s Portland office’s X account tweeted that the office was investigating the shooting of two people in the city by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents. That tweet was later deleted. CNBC has reached out to the FBI for comment.
“Just one day after a horrific incident of violence at the hands of federal agents in Minnesota, our community here in Portland is currently grappling with another deeply disturbing incident,” Keith Wilson, the mayor of Portland, whose city is the focus of the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement efforts, said in a statement.
“We cannot stand by and watch constitutional protections erode and bloodshed increase,” Wilson said.
“Portland is not a ‘training ground’ for militarized operatives,” he said. “The administration’s threat of ‘all out’ will have deadly consequences.” “As Mayor, I am calling on ICE to cease all operations in Portland until a full investigation is completed.”
Portland Police said in a statement that they responded to a report of a shooting on Southeast Main Street in the city’s Hazelwood neighborhood.
“Officers have confirmed that federal agents were involved in the shooting,” the statement said. “Portland Police Department is not involved in the incident.”
“At 2:24 p.m., officers received information of a man calling for help who had been shot in the area of Northeast 146th Street and East Burnside,” police said in a statement.
“Officers responded and found a man and woman suffering from apparent gunshot wounds,” the statement said.
“Officers applied a tourniquet and called emergency medical personnel. The patient was transported to the hospital. His condition is unknown.”
“Authorities have determined that two people were injured in gunfire by federal agents,” police said in a statement.
The names of the man and woman who were shot have not been released.
