President Donald Trump suggested the U.S. military may launch a ground attack on Mexican drug cartels in a new interview aired Thursday.
President Trump told Fox News host Sean Hannity: “We’ve taken out 97 percent of the drugs coming in through our waterways, and now the cartels are going to start coming on land.”
“Cartels are running Mexico. It’s very sad to see what’s happening to this country,” President Trump said.
The White House did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment on the president’s remarks.
Trump’s proposal comes less than a week after U.S. forces attacked Venezuela and captured authoritarian leader Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Celia Flores.
Last week, the Trump administration also threatened military action in Cuba, Colombia and Greenland.
