A new biography about Prince Harry, in which Queen Camilla allegedly said he had been brainwashed by his wife Meghan, was described by a spokesperson for the prince on Saturday as an “insane conspiracy”.
Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan have been estranged from the British royal family since leaving royal duties and moving to California in 2020, but they continue to attract a lot of attention both in the UK and abroad.
Author Tom Bower, who has written numerous biographies about the royal family, said in an excerpt from his new book published in The Times that the couple began feuding with other royals shortly after their glittering wedding in 2018.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex currently have very little conversation with other royals, and Prince Harry has barely seen his father, King Charles, in recent years.
Bower wrote that Prince Harry’s brother William and his wife Kate are wary of Meghan’s influence on him and see her as a threat.
According to the author, the prince’s stepmother, Camilla, told a friend that Meghan had brainwashed Prince Harry.
Prince Harry was also shocked by the fall from grace of his uncle, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, who lost all titles and was banished from his home due to his relationship with the late US convict Jeffrey Epstein, and feared his brother would be effectively banished as well, according to excerpts.
In an unusually strong reaction, a spokesperson for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle said Bower’s comments had “long crossed the line from criticism to fixed criticism”.
“Those interested in facts will look elsewhere, but those looking for insane intrigue and melodrama know exactly where to find him,” a spokesperson said in a statement.
Buckingham Palace declined to comment on behalf of King Charles and Queen Camilla. Representatives for Prince William and Duchess Kate were not immediately available for comment.
