Spain has denied White House claims that Madrid is currently cooperating militarily with Washington in the midst of a war with Iran, despite President Donald Trump’s threat to use trade to punish Spanish officials for their stance.
White House press secretary Caroline Levitt suggested Wednesday that Spain’s position on refusing to allow its own military bases in the war against Iran has changed.

“In terms of Spain, I think they heard the president’s message loud and clear yesterday. My understanding is that in the last few hours, Spain has agreed to cooperate with the U.S. military,” Levitt told reporters.
The Spanish government quickly dismissed the claims, with Foreign Minister José Manuel Álvarez saying he “categorically” denied the White House’s claims.
“Not a single comma has changed. I have no idea what they’re referring to,” Alvarez told radio show Hora25.
President Trump on Tuesday slammed Spain’s opposition to the war, calling it “terrible.”
“We will cut off all trade with Spain. We want nothing to do with Spain,” the president said.
However, Madrid became defiant in the face of Washington’s economic threat and repeatedly opposed the war.
“The world, Europe and Spain have faced this moment of crisis before. In 2003, a few irresponsible leaders dragged us into an illegal war in the Middle East that has brought us nothing but anxiety and suffering,” Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez wrote in the X newspaper on Wednesday.
He added that Spain’s position remains against war, violations of international law and “the illusion that bombs can solve the world’s problems.”
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian praised Spain’s stance on Wednesday.
“Spain’s responsible action against the flagrant human rights violations and military aggression against countries, including Iran, by the Zionist American Union shows that ethics and an awakened conscience still exist in the West,” he said in a social media post.
“I commend the attitude of the Spanish authorities.”
