Wigan 16-34 Huddersfield: 6-try Giants overwhelm Warriors to extend Super League perfect record | Rugby League News

Struggling Huddersfield put in a sensational performance to beat Betfred Super League leaders Wigan 34-16 at the Brick Community Stadium.

The Giants sacked head coach Luke Robinson last weekend after losing their opening five league games, but Wigan went into the game top of the table with a perfect record.

However, with assistant coach Liam Finn taking charge on an interim basis, Huddersfield scored six tries and recorded a comprehensive win.

It was a historic day for 29-year-old Tara Jones. She was awarded an MBE for her services to the sport and that week became the first woman to referee a Men’s Super League match.

She was a key figure from the start, with Huddersfield replacing her after Liam Farrell had a try rejected for offside, with Jacob Gagai, Tanguy Zenon and Niall Evers scoring three tries in 15 minutes.

The second was initially ruled out as a knock-on, but after a lengthy review Huddersfield’s captaincy challenge was deemed successful.

Wigan finally came on a minute before the break, Zac Eckersley diving in and the Warriors put on some heavy pressure at the start of the second half, but Jacob Douglas ran in the corner for Huddersfield’s fourth try.

Shortly after, Conor Wrench made his debut with his fifth goal, and Jack Farrimond’s cross for Wigan was only met by Adam Clune’s stylish run down the left.

Farrell’s try earned Wigan the winning point, but it was a testing afternoon for the leaders.
