St Helens head coach Paul Lawrie has expressed interest in the vacant England head coaching position, saying he has a “burning desire” to coach his country.
England are currently without a head coach after Sean Wayne resigned after six years in charge of the national team.
Wayne’s departure comes after England lost 3-0 in the Ashes in October last year and were soundly defeated by Australia in all three Tests.
With the Rugby League World Cup to be held this autumn, a search for Wayne’s replacement is underway, and Willie Peters’ move to Papua New Guinea Chiefs from 2027 makes that a difficult task.

Speaking live on Sky Sports ahead of the Good Friday derby between St Helens and Wigan Warriors, Lowry said: “As a player, representing your country is the biggest honor you can get.
“As a coach, I have a strong desire to coach England.”
Hull KR head coach Peter was thought to be the frontrunner to take over the job, but it has since been reported that he has since resigned as assistant coach at the Kangaroos and was also removed from the England national team head coaching candidate process.
That means the search will continue until April, with many believing that Leeds Rhinos head coach Brad Arthur could be the manager called in to lead the national team to the World Cup.
However, Lowry, who represented England during his playing days, said he would “embrace” the opportunity and that his career goal was to be involved with England in a coaching capacity.

“Willie Peters is entitled, but it might have been floating around now. He would have been a strong favorite to win and, of course, he’s been phenomenal while he’s been here.
“It’s something I want to embrace and love a part of.
“It’s definitely a goal of mine to achieve and a burning desire to do so. Singing the national anthem and leading your country as a player and coach is an incredible emotion and gets your heart racing.”
