Ellie Scotney is set to write her own chapter in British boxing history on Sunday night.
If she defeats Mayeli Flores to unify the WBA, WBO, WBC and IBF super bantamweight titles, she will become Britain’s youngest undisputed world champion in the four-belt era.
Her trainer Shane McGuigan is rooting for Scotney to win against Flores at the Olympia in Kensington, which will be broadcast live on Sky Sports on Sunday, but also believes there is much more to come for her.
“If you want my honest opinion, I want her to be the undisputed three-division world champion. That’s the next goal, the next mission and I think she’s capable of achieving that,” McGuigan told Sky Sports.
“I believe she will become the undisputed three-division world champion.”
There is no doubt that this will be Scotney’s last fight at 122 pounds as he has moved up in weight.
“It’s very difficult[to gain weight]. The only reason I’ve been able to do it for so long is because I can’t argue with it,” she told Sky Sports.
“There’s no arguing that the reason we’ve kept the super bantam for so long is because everyone pays attention to it.
“God willing, the collection will be completed on April 5th, then I will move on.”
“There are going to be some big fights at featherweight,” Scotney added.
“April is all that matters, and that’s all my attention.”
Although Flores is small in stature, he is a strong opponent who throws ferocious punches. These factors combine to turn a two-minute round into ten frenetic battles.
McGuigan said of Flores, “It’s a really, really tough fight. She’s lost once, but that was a long time ago. She beat a very good champion in (Nazarena) Romero, and she has a great work rate and is a decent puncher, but she’s very small.”
“She’s probably going to have a hard time getting a clean hit because of her size. We’ve prepared well, but how can she find a 4’11 sparring partner who’s as athletic, strong and durable as the person she’s boxing with?”
“This is a match where we really have to turn it on and make sure she comes out of this fight with a win.”
Dolan: Now is the right time for me.
Emma Dolan will open her televised IBF super flyweight world title bout against Mexico’s Irma Garcia.
This will be Dolan’s first appearance at the world championships. But she hopes to follow in the footsteps of her International Amateur teammate Scotney and win multiple titles.
“For me it’s all about legacy. I’m not interested in this, that or the other. For me it’s all about legacy fights. I want to fight other champions,” she told Sky Sports.
“I knew that eventually I would get to this stage and eventually get to the world level. So I didn’t know who I was going to fight, but I knew that I was going to fight one of them. I’ve been watching Irma for the last few years, so I have a good idea of what she does and what she’s good at.”
Dolan continued: “I just do what I have to do and I know that’s enough.
“I feel like this is the right time for me. I feel like I’m ready and I can’t wait to get it.”
“I haven’t had a boring fight yet. Depending on how Irma decides to box, that will be a factor, but it should be a really good fight.”
Watch Caroline Dubois vs Terry Harper and Ellie Scotney vs Mayeli Flores live on Sky Sports from 7pm.
